This International Standard speci es requirements and test
methods for protective clothing capable of signalling the
user’s presence visually. This clothing is intended to provide
conspicuity in hazardous situations under any light conditions
by day and under illumination by vehicle headlights in the dark.
Performance requirements include colour and retro-re ection
properties. Further, minimum areas and the con guration of the
visible area are speci ed.

are the two main properties which are tested in EN 343.
The following parameters are used:
X: Resistance to water penetration (3 levels of which 3 is the
highest achievable class).
Y: Water vapour resistance - Breathing properties (3 levels of
which 3 is the highest achievable class).
